The Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project I was implemented through World Bank loan assistance at a total project cost of Rs. 2442 Crore from 2004 to 2012. The works taken up under the project included - Up gradation of 725 Km of roads, Enhanced Maintenance of about 1033 Km of roads, Road Safety, Black Spot Improvement Works and Institutional Development etc.

Government has formed Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project II in the year 2013 with an aim to upgrade high intensity traffic road corridors in the State. The Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board (TNIDB) under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Chief Minister has allotted an amount of Rs. 65 Crore for carrying out DPR Preparation for a length of 2079 km. DPR preparation for the selected roads have been taken up through five Consultants and then it was revised to 1980.600 Kms length of road . Out of 1980.600 Kms length of roads, the DPR preparation for 1950.967 Kms length of roads have been completed and the balance stretches of 97.673 Kms of length of roads are in final stage of completion. World Bank appraisal mission for the initial phase of the project was completed in mid December 2014 and loan agreement signed in May 2015.

Out of the above, 427 Km of road works have been taken up under Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) mode in 10 packages and 146 km road works are proposed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The works under EPC mode have been entrusted and are in progress. For PPP Three package works, after getting NOC from World Bank, Agreement executed for PPP02 & PPP03 works for a road total length of 115.84 Km on 23.03.2018 & 28-03-2018 respectively. Pre-Construction work for PPP-02 is under progress. PPP 03 Agreement annulled due to non –submission of Performance Security Rebid under process. The tender for the balance stretch of 30.60 Km (PPP-01) mode length of road will be invited shortly.
